Notes on this list

A Greek chess club is a skakistikos omilos or syllogos, and Attica has them in almost every municipality. Beside the clubs that do nothing but chess stand the chess sections of large sports associations, Panellinios, Panathinaikos, Panionios and AEK among them, and of gymnastics, hiking and cultural societies. Nearly all of them are registered with the Hellenic Chess Federation, and most play in the team leagues and cups of the Attica union, which is how a club with no website of its own still shows that it is alive.

In the city of Athens the clubs sit in Ampelokipoi, Kypseli, Petralona, Pagkrati and Neos Kosmos; around it, in Kallithea, Ilioupoli, Vyronas, Peristeri, Petroupoli, Chalandri and Cholargos, in Piraeus, Nikaia, Keratsini and Korydallos, and in the north around Kifisia and Marousi. Only a few publish a timetable. Where a page gives the days of the clubroom or of the lessons, the entry shows them; where the register is the only source, the entry says that no recent sign of play was found. The Latin spelling of each name is a transliteration made for this guide; the page of an entry gives the Greek name beneath it, and the Greek pages list every club under its Greek name.
